What YOU Need to Know About Guppies!

Guppy fish, or fancy guppies, are small, colorful, and easy to care for. They are popular among aquarium hobbyists because of their beautiful colors and active personalities. In this article, we will discuss how to care for guppy fish and ensure that they are healthy and happy in your aquarium.

Tank setup
Guppies are small fish and can be kept in a relatively small tank. However, it is recommended that they be kept in at least a 10-gallon tank. The water temperature should be kept in the mid to low 20's Celsius. The pH should be around 7.0 to 8.0. I have personally found that guppies tend to do far better with harder water with a higher pH (above 7.0). To achieve this result I would recommend adding some crushed oyster shell to the filter system. It is essential to ensure that your aquarium is properly cycled so that it can process the waste produced by the fish. If you need help in this space, please feel free to reach out! Guppies prefer aquariums with plenty of hiding spots, so consider adding live plants, rocks, and driftwood to your tank.

Feeding
In my opinion, the key to healthy guppies long term is a varied diet. An example diet that I would recommend is below

4x per week good quality veggie flake

1x per week frozen tubifex

1x per week Repashy Community Plus

Tankmates
Guppies are peaceful fish and can be kept with other community fish such as glowlight tetra, cherry barbs, pearl danio, mollies, and platies. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish such as tiger barbs or silvertip tetra. Betta or Fighting Fish are also not recommended to be kept with guppies. Guppies big tails often make them a target for aggression from the bettas.

Breeding
Guppies are prolific breeders. If you want to breed guppies, make sure that you have enough space in your tank to accommodate the fry. Keep a 1-2 male to female ratio, ensure there is a hiding spot for the fry and nature will do the rest!

In conclusion, guppies are easy to care for and make great pets for both beginner and experienced aquarium hobbyists. By following these tips on tank setup, water quality, feeding, lighting, tankmates, breeding, and health, you can ensure that your guppies are happy and healthy in your aquarium. Remember to provide them with plenty of hiding spots and a varied diet, and they will reward you with their beautiful colors and active personalities.
